A new season ahead
I think that there is something amazing in the air- unlike any previous fall season-

i was confirmed about this last night when I was caught in an amazing 5 minute hail storm- the world was turned to white in less than five minutes- fight that trident white chewing gum

I'll get some pics of the pad up soon- it's starting to come together! Look for a wednesday night group starting up again soon- maybe do dinner once a month and some conversation and study the others--

Sew what's noah been sewing--- haven't touched the machine in weeks- EECK!
Got a groovy holiday skirt project on the brain- maybe like $65 cockatil bottoms-

Riding a new rig- SKILLET street food is the time suck culprit- but man i'ts amazing! There is so much innovation and drive I can't get enough!

Aren't the leaves so amazing this year- I remember I used to love jogging on the golden paths- the smell!

My friend Jaci asked me to do the dresses for her BridesMaids for her August 4th wedding! It was a fun experience in Pattern Grading and factory construction methods of day dresses.

I was also commissioned to create the Groomsmen Neckwear out of a beautiful Cotton Linen Blend in GOLD!

A quick pose with all the pretty ladies in the dresses! Each had pockets, Invisible Back-Zip, and was fitted to their measurements!

My reality was seriously enhanced during their SMASHING Father Daughter Dance Routine!

A classic IKAT style textile. The yarns are died before weaving,
so the dye determines much of the pattern, waiting to be found by
the weaver. It's kind of a fun "take it as it comes" creative process,
though I'm sure there is quite a bit of intention behind a
skilled weavers ways!

It's not necessarliy anything new. In fact, it's been around far longer than I've been breathing, but Ikat has recently resurfaced in the movement of trends in fashion for home and apparel. It's awesome.

So- it's not ikea, for anyone not as hip to the trends as I am! he he! But it is probably available at Ikea because they are a wonder of cool things for cheap.

Ikat is turning up on the runways and in our homes, it has been for a few season now.
This was a great collage off of Design Sponge to showcase this amazing pattern in all it's varieties!

Ikat is an indonesian word that means alot of things (tie, bind, cord) but as we're seeing it used today in the States its referring to the textile that is created from dyed threads. It has a very ancient background, one of the oldest forms of textile decoration really.

It's made form dyeing the warp and weft of the textile before it's woven. What the warp? The warp and weft are what you call the up/down (warp) and the side to side (weft) yarns in a woven textile. So here's whats happening, you die the yarn first, and kind of like tie-dye you only dip parts of it in the juice. Then after it's cleaned and dried you string it up on the loom and get to weaving. It's amazing stuff!

I'm crazy about it because I realized that it is really a "trendy" adoption of my Southwestern Heritage. I grew up with an amazing culture of the Navajo Apache Indian tribes that was so full of beautiful handcrafts. As I look back to those roots as my creative influence, I find this awesome Inspiration! I want to Ikat everything! My credit card, my dog, my bath towel... it could be anywhere. I think i love it for it's strong geometry, and in some versions it's great color melting.

High Holy Holidays

I'm a fanatic for the season that we find ourselves in currently. Three Three Eleven was an amazing day that I've been anticipating since January!
I woke up early enough to cook breakfast, study, and get preped with some Morning Affirmations inspired by Jessica's Dailiy Affirmation! If you haven't watched this video you GOTTA!

So needless to say I'm feeling great! What's my deal with March 3? I have this crazy thing where every time I meet an AMAZING person, guess when their birthday is. And it's actually my one year anniversary of reclaiming my VIRGINITY and PURITY, which is crazy and awesome at one time!

Heading to work, fun, BUSY day at FareStart which was followed (and highly anticipated) with my 3rd interview for a promotion into a position doing community engagement and volunteer coordinating. It was with Three other people at 3:33 PM and I'm telling you, I nailed it! I find out early this coming week (maybe on Ash Wednesday?!)

So after rocking an interview like Bon Jovi, I got home, had a dance party with myself and Moses, and then went to my friend Meghann's house for some great dinner and conversation, followed by a show at the Jewel Box with my roommates!

Walking home from Belltown to Pioneer Square with three amazing men, we kicked soda bottles and talked about the dreams we have for our studio flat. It was magical, and really everything I wanted it to be!

I was thinking to myself... why does it have to be just one day a year? Why can't I embrace every day with that same vision of passion and purpose? Well, yesterday I'll say I did. Today... I'm reminding myself right now!

I meet amazing people in life. I've just come to deal with it. Amazing! And in that wonderfulness of meeting amazing people, I seem to stumble into these opportunities that remind me how much I love my life! OMG I LOVE MY LIFE!
right-

So I'm talking about a sweet (I love sweets) offer from a friend Sharon of Le Reve on Queen Anne to help her with some roman shades in her new French Bakery!
So we had some remnantes from a previous design project that we thought would compliment the tones used in the interior color scheme! Small simple project! They turned out great I think!

The most exciting part of the whole endeavor was the installation- because I show up to THIS!

Le Reve is one of a select few to offer Olympic Coffee Roasting Co in the Seattle area, and as it's a new shop, they were amidst a TASTING and guess who got to try some of each of the NINE different varieties available! OH yes it was ME! HE HE It was an interesting proccess- it was cold coffee in cups and we had a spoon to dip a sip from the cup and enjoy. Best of all were ALL THE SWEETS because they were also still perfecting the menu! YUMMY!

So check them out! Support my gals! I promise you will be wowed at the door by a tall fun barista named Leah who will knock you down with her awesome smile, and then just TRY a treat- they were all so good I almost converted to a "sweetaterian"!

Old Pillow New Life

As the story always seems to go, I met a friend of a friend, yada yada yada!So Jen and I were connected through a mutual friend with a GREAT SEAFOAM GREEN DRESS and she had some beautiful Pillowcases that her Grandmother Hand Embroidered years ago that were sitting in the linen closet. Jen had pulled out a clipping from the Real Simple magazine years ago where they had turned one of these pillowcases into a summer top! We had a few different pieces, some of them still doubles, and she gave me FREE REIGN which is always exciting! Here's what I came up with!

With on of the double sets I actually created a hoodie. Her grandmothers embroidery work was so perfect that I could use the WRONG SIDE of the needlework on the OUTSIDE of the garment to get a mirrored pattern. It turned out so cute!

And here is our stunning princess in her pillowcase dress at her One Year Birthday looking so PRECIOUS! the great thing about this dress is it will absolutely grow with her, turning into a top in later toddler years!

Old Fashion Summer

With a few minutes before the party was supposed to start, it was still raining outside, so we decked out the house real quick to get an Americana Vibe going on.

A Cherry Pit Spit was a cheap and tasty game that was easy for anyone to let their hair down! I just passed out a bowl of cherries and STOOD BACK to judge whos' pits were landing the farthest!

A Pie Eating Contest was the easiest to get volunteers for-suprising huh!! We just made easy pudding pies with whip cream tops and prebaked pie shells to make it cheap and quick! It's about getting messy, not the actually taste!

Since it was potluck style we decked out a few tables in some vintage clothes and added a few pieces for height! It was a snap, and I just kept someone on "buffet duty" as friends brought their dishes in to put them where they would make most sense!

So i was a little excited to win the three legged race contest. I had been looking forward to it all week long! Luckily the rain let up in time for us to move some games outside!

One of my favorite design ideas is to make something old into something new.
Not an entirely fresh idea- granted- but I love to do it none-the-less!
So when I was approached by my friend {and blog designer ;) } to turn an old favorite sweater into a new beanie- I was pretty pumped!

It was an easy project! I totally would reccomend this to anyone that has a sewing machine! I cut out a large rectangle from the front of the sweater. I rounded off the top to give it a traditional beanie shape!

Next- sew your sides together. It's one big tube! I used a "stretch" setting on my machine that never gets used- and I think it turned out awesome! What do you think?

I've been in a baking mood lately! AWESOME! I love having treats around. I would make cakes weekly as a kid, and aren't we all longing to get back to those simple fun days somehow?!
I was craving something kind of dense and filling- and CHOCOLATE!
I decided I would wing this one and have some fun, so I started with some of the basics, sugar, flour, butter, oil, eggs, and of course the magic of baking powder and baking soda! I used my eyes and tongue to get me to a basic dough, and for a special kick I added some espresso syrup that I had hanging around!

I baked using little loaf pans, and after making a special Peanut Butter Frosting (you know I love it!) I had somehow managed to make the most amazing little cake to enjoy with my afternoon cup of jo- among other times, but if I really told you that I ate it for breakfast lunch and dinner you might worry about my dietary health!

When I lived in Brazil in highschool, my mom had to send me peanut butter in the mail because for some crazy reason they didn't have it. Weird, I know, and I go into peanut withdrawls after a few days- so you know I have concocted some pretty interesting treats with my favorite extra crunchy spread.

Betty Crockers Peanut Butter Cookie Recipe is so used it's HIGHLIGHTED in my cookbook! HA! I hope that someday when this sacred bible of cooking is passed down to the next Cooley in line- they will understand the importance of a classic such as the highlighted PB Cookies!

So I use the same worktable for cooking and sewing- and so sometimes spools of thread end up being nearby the mixing bowl! But I do wipe and clean my surfaces before I start a new project- usually! After the butter's are creamed together, you get to start adding sugar! mmmmm.... i love sugar!

So despite my Grandmothers precise instructions to use accurate measuring utensils, I would often see her sneak in a few ingredients under her "measuring eyes" as the gauge- and as I yearn to follow in her footsteps, I have completely abandoned a set of measuring devices. I stir by hand, I pinch and guess and usually turn out pretty right on! Hope you don't mind Grandma! I'm breaking the RULES!!!!

I think I got this from my aunt Janie- because she was somewhat legendary for this, but I have a hard time not EATING HALF THE COOKIE DOUGH before it ever hits the pan! I usually mix a double recipe so that I can chow down without seeing the end results dwindle too much!

This time I decided to use a Pyrex pan for Peanut Butter Bars instead of cookies! To keep that classic PBCookie feel going, I used a pie-dough knife to create the cute little criss-cross tops on a larger scale!

They were amazing- I got a little overwhelmed by cookie request on Facebook- but I did manage to save a few from my gluttoness hand and share with a few friends! Follow me on Reality Enhancement or Facebook and make your request quick the next time I get behind the mixing bowl!

Half Off Special!

If you didn't know already, I LOVE vintage things- and I'm not alone! My dear friend Abbi was given this pretty little number- and as awesome as burgundy taffeta is, when the seams are rotting out and the dress comes to your ankles, it's somehow looses some of that awesomeness! So- Abbi thought I could get this into a more wearable piece for today!

Here's what I did- it was kind of fun- picked up the siscors and just cut it in half! HA! So the bottom of this dress was an amazing circle skirt- the funnest kind around! The side zipper I saved, but I moved it to the center back and left it a tad bit exposed to make it "on trend"!

No skirt is a good skirt without pockets in my opinion, and so with some of the extra fabric from that lovely bodice, I tucked pockets into the side seams, and then slapped on a waistband to make the piece finished. The hemline did come up about 6 inches, and I did a fine rolled hem to complete the piece!
Check it out- pretty awesome huh? Abbie looked awesome in it! WOOHOO for Making Things Brighter!

Fit for a (prom) Queen!

On of the funnest (for me) ways of enhancing reality is to alter clothing! I've had a blast the last few weeks with some super fun projects! The one for today's post was a special treat! My friend Kelley Moore was hosting a Prom Party, and this dress was the perfect piece for my Chelsea to wear to said party! Problem was that it was a wee bit too small! We all know those dames of the 40's were under so much girdling corseting pressure that it would take an army to get the zipper closed!

So we had a few bugs to work out before our dress was ready for another appearance at the Prom in 2010!
The zipper was broken, the boobs were too high and too pointy, and the dress needed to be let out about 4 dress sizes.

Awesome! So the first attack was this HUGE bow on the back. Ripping it out gave me some fabric to use and cleaned up the back of the dress. The zipper was next- it turned out that it just needed a little love and wax, and then it was working well!
The pointy boobs were going to be a little tricky!

I rounded out the darts towards the neckline, and actually added another two darts from the armhole into the center front to make the bust shape more modern and fitted.

There was not enough fabric in the seams to just let out a little extra- so after opening up the construction-

I pinned the dress to the form and inserted tracing paper into the hole- to make a pattern!

I cut out the traced shape and then cut it into strips to expand it- this was to create a piece that would have gathering like the dresses bodice.

After cutting, gathering, ironing and inserting, the finished piece turned out quite well! Best part was, atleast from my perspective, that there was enough leftover from the bow to make a bowtie and cumberbun for Chelseas' date!

This post is an outpouring of gratitude! Life is just so awesome!

Entering into this new season post-Easter has just brought new abundance and blessing that is beyond expectation!
I was about to sit down to dinner, another "Noah Creation" with some rappini, chicken, shallots and seasoned with mustard and cumin awesomeness- and as I was thinking about what I'm thankful for, I was BLASTED!

Check out what this week has in store for Reality Enhancement:
-Three new sewing clients with some fun alterations ahead, one is an awesome new cashmere hat!

-One contract sewing job for a friend Kristen that is selling bags out of Burlap and Flannel! (Def more news to follow soon!)

-Two amazing seminars! One- a business social marketing seminar for FREE at the college across the street from my house, and Two- Abba's Love conference in Kirkland where I get to hear some awesome encouragement from the lovely Heidi Baker of Iris International- and if you don't know her, google it- it's the best five minutes of your life you've ever spent internet searching!

-New job serving at banquets starts Wednesday in Everette for a private Boeing Party- best part- besides having access to impact TONS of people I don't know- is BENEFITS! like insurance benefits baby!

and this is the kicker
-Being PAID for dental work by a student at UW that needs my "textbook perfect cavities" to pass his board exam! I get paid for the fillings. I will repeat: I GET PAID TO HAVE WORK DONE! ha ha ha!

Dude- if my reality isn't being enhanced, I don't know what else to call it!

Let Them Eat Soup!

I love to cook, and I really love to cook for alot of people! Since Moses doesn't get to munch on human goodies, a typical meal ends up having a few days of left overs unless I call in the troops to help me polish off a feast! Recently I've been on an vegan diet for LENT and with the Pikes Place Market down the road from my house, I have been soaking in the land of fresh fruits and veggies!

Sweet potatoes and parsnip caught my eye at Franks Produce, and so started the inspiration for this hefty soup!

After cooking down the potatoes and parsnips with some garlic, I pureed them to create my "stock, and then added some simmered mushrooms and onions, then a little kale, garnished with some sweet sweet beets!

Voila! It was amazingly yummy and filling filling! I asked some friends to come over to help me enjoy the feast, and it was such an awesome night that I decided to make another soup the next day!!

This time I started with some Yellow Split Peas and after they had simmered about 40 minutes, I added some fresh green snap peas for some color and variety!

Some fresh Kale and then squash and sweet potatoes were the next ingredients! I cook these individually from the main pot so that I can achieve desired textures for these very different veggies!

And after it was all done, whoa whoa whoa Noah you did it again! So even after friends helping the consume the vegan goodies, I still have a stack of leftover soup in my fridge for those rainy Seattle days!

Whoever does these is genius: I came across I guys blog who claimed he was the original creator- started in the Greenwood area in North Seattle. There is an awesome one by St. Marks Cathedral that I always look forward to on my way home from Compline on Sunday Nights. I encourage everyone to put on your black ski mask tomorrow night at midnight and let's claw up towns EVERYWHERE! (I hope this isn't used against me in a court of law)

All Things that Glitter

One of my dear friends Adrian Jo was celebrating her birthday (she's a 3-3 baby--- my FAVS) and her graduation from our dear alma matter AIDT with an over-the-top celebration of all things Adrian! Appropriately enough called "Glitter and Gold"- cause let me tell you, this girl has got some Diva in her! HA! (You know that's in love Adrian!)
So- first order of business- what am I going to wear? My closet just happened to have a few treasures in it to fit the bill! I reached first for this great Gold Sharkskin Blazer I found at Value Village a year ago! A bow tie was in order to keep up the class and I came across this groovy little black fatty estate sale-ing last weekend! A pair of gray tweed trousers kept the texture interesting, and then a gray tshirt kept it fresh and from feeling too stuffy! Accessories!! You know they make it all work right- so a velvet cummerbund and my dad's gold watch polished things off to perfection!

I started contemplating what in the world I was going to give as a gift to this special girl- she means alot to me in so many ways- and as I was thinking of some of our favorite stores- I suddenly realized: I HAVE THIS AWESOME SEWING MACHINE! So out to the salvation army where I found an amazing Vegas-Grandma-Shoulderpadded-Wonder! After ripping a few pieces apart, switching things around, and adding a few vintage zippers, I concocted this clever little number for Adrian to wear at her party! BA-BAM!!

So the party was a hit! She's a little entertaining queen with a gold house cocktail, hors d'oeuvres, and sweet cupcakes in a little dessert tree! I HAD to bring Moses of course, and besides his stinky gas (it clears a room everytime) he was a great helper! Adrian wore the dress like a GLOVE- some sexy strappy heels added the edge that it needed to runway worthy! Thanks for an amazing night Adrian, and CONGRADS ON BEING SO FABULOUS!

Simple things that make you feel awesome:
Coffee
Phone calls from friends far away
someone asking you advice on how to decorate their apartment!!

I got a RANDOM facebook message from an old classmate with a decorating delima- a TINY LA apartment with NO art on the walls- what to do!

I was honored, excited, and got right to work!! The way art works in a room is MAGIC and there is somethign special about it only because the art has evoked a response in YOU! So- as my mom was quick to point out- art is a really personal thing, how are you going to tell someone what to put up in their apartment? (thanks mom!)
-my answer- "easy, I don't!" but I do have some ideas- they can fill in the blanks!
So my neighbor Dave is often recipient of my free "advice" whether or not he wants it, and one day I said "Dave you know what you should do- you should hang a bunch of frames of different sizes on this wall in your living room" and then his little creative self took it a step further and invited friends over for a day of photos to fill these frames of different sizes and this is the result for under a hundred bucks and a couple weeks of thrift store hunting! So I recomended a great collage to my buddy Brian who was soliciting my all to frequent advice! But it didn't stop there! I had to give a blast to my favorite Seattle peeps at Tacky Smack because their vinyl clings are the bomb.com when it comes to chic and trendy wall decor, and the best part is that it comes off when you leave, so no deposit/landlord squabbles you know!!! I am also super in love with GRAFFITI right now!! I want to go on a night time adventure but so far I'm not cool enough to get in with the cool crowd to go vandalize things at night so I will just keep practicing at home in my apartment- with the windows open yes mom- but wouldn't this be so awesome in anyone's house? okay, maybe not my grandmas, but any of my friends I think would FLIP to have something this awesome in their space! So of course Brian thought this was the DOPE stuff. His remark however- "the wifey would hate it"! ha ha ha ha! Oh come one wifies all over the nation-- get hip and let us graffiti in the living room PUHLEEZ!!!

So time for another cup of coffee and some time at the drafting table!

Another Pot on the Fire!

I have been told again and again that I have a hard time focusing. I prayed about it this morning, and when I opened my journal, don't you know that the theme of the week was "to be focused, prepared and to be holy as He is holy"! ha!

Well, This last two weeks have been a barrage of new endeavors, an amazing workshop time with jewelry artist Meghann S. of &tc. Jewelry which created a furry of Zipper Rosettes on my side of the table! While she pumped out 5 pieces I atleast got my head around one!

Also started another project i'm calling the Easter Collection 2010. I love to sew, and after finding a screaming deal on a new machine on Craigslist, i was anxious to get things cracking! An Easter Dress Collection for Women is what came to mind, and after scouring second hand stores for fabrics and textiles, I got to the drawing board and sketched out some concepts, and hi ho we're on the way!
The first one out is not my favorite, but it's getting better! I'm playing with bubble hems and exposed zippers! Bright fun colors and cuts that are appropriate for Church and summer sunny days to come!

Creative Release

A few weeks ago, trotting down the main drag, I stumbled into a nifty tag sale some eccentric old ladies had set up inside an old video store space. Treasures treasures treasures! From an awesome antique Zebra Hyde rug to dishes and great end tables, I was gasping every few steps.
I WANT IT!
After a couple loops to make sure I had checked it all out atleast twice, I decided there was nothing I NEEDED, but that I would be a fool to not snatch up some canvases that she had marked at 4 bucks!

A painting sounded awesome, it has been some time since I got out the brushes. I have been inspired by beautiful fabrics with a color blending pattern, almost like water color. So- though there is no real plan ( I like to fly by the seat of my pants!) it's coming along!

I have plans to connect the pink "cherry blossoms" with some trunk, but beyond that I'm not sure where it's going next! Any ideas?

Big Dreams

I have a fabulous friend known as Kat. She walks through life differently than most. I love her for this. Usually our conversations are not nearly frequent enough, but when they happen, they're always huge.
Kat influenced my move to Seattle. It's changed my life.
Kat has now influenced what I'm doing in Seattle. Once again, it's changed my life.

The details of the converstation aren't worth recounting so much as the fact that it was one of those moments where you have a friend that knows you so well that they can remember when you had seasons of genius and remind you of them when you're not feeling too Einstein about your path.

Automatic buttonhole feature. Really Grandma, automatic. It's like one of those new cars that park themselves. And yes Grandma, I still have the old machine, I'll make sure it finds a place in your storage shed somehow!

The Joys of Parenthood

Ahhh... the cute little way he rubs his face in the morning, the precious cuddle times, his little wagging tail as I come in the front door! After the papers were signed and the collar was clicked on, the joys of parenthood begun. The journey so far has proven interesting in it's revelation: who knew what a little 11 pound fur-ball could teach about patience, and man oh man I've started talking to strangers about poop schedules. ewwww!

I won't deny the frustrations as i stumble to slip into pants and shoes at 2:30 AM for a potty run, but as I write now with a little body cuddled on my lap, it's all worth it!

I didn't adopt little Moses, he adopted me, and I am so lucky!
